Pilkinton is currently completing a book entitled Washington Hall at Notre Dame, 1864-2004 for the University of Notre Dame Press. His Records of Early English Drama: Bristol (Toronto, 1997) was the thirteenth volume in the REED series, which has as its goal the location, transcription, and editing of documents pertaining to theatre, drama, music, and minstrelsy in Britain before 1642. In addition, he has written articles for journals such as Modern Drama, Medium Aevum, Essays in Theatre/Etudes Théâtrales, and Theatre Notebook. Founding Director of Theatre AUM (1975), the production arm of the Department of Theatre at Auburn University at Montgomery (Alabama), he also directs regularly for the Notre Dame mainstage season, including most recently Artaud's Spurt of Blood. He is founding director of the New Playwrights Workshop (1998), a production outlet for student-written one-act plays, and served as chair of the department for thirteen years between 1984 and 2003.
