Wars are fought not only on battlefields but also through the production and dissemination of information and entertainment. War stories are thus neither neutral nor disinterested. What ethical obligations attend to films that narrate historic conflicts? Might such films create spaces for personal and social healing? And how should these efforts at memorializing war through filmmaking be evaluated? This workshop takes a close look at Biyi Bandele’s 2013 film, Half of a Yellow Sun, to better appreciate how its retelling of the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970) creates opportunities for remembering, witnessing, and collective healing decades later.
