Join Dr. La Donna L. Forsgren as she goes beyond discussing the financial calamity of Broadway’s 2018 musical adaptation of King Kong, to assessing how audiences made sense of it. Dr. Forsgren analyzes the relationship between spectatorship, identity politics, popular culture, and social justice in the United States, taking special note of how Black queer feminist spectators use resistant readership, to take pleasure in experiencing King Kong. Dr. Forsgren concludes her discussion of why King Kong, produced during the "Black Lives Matter" and "Say Her Name" movements, has found even greater meaning and resonances for Black queer feminist spectators and their allies.
Dr. Forsgren is the Rev. Thomas J. McDonagh, C.S.C. Associate Professor of Film, Television, and Theatre in the Department of Film, Television, and Theatre.
