Visual Cultures Workshop | Waiting for Eid: Joy and Anxiety in scripted Ramadan TV serials in Pakistan

-

Location: B043, DeBartolo Performing Arts Center (View on map )

Every year, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan. In addition to the spiritual renaissance and self-reflection the month provides, Ramadan is also a time of collective joy ending in Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest annual celebration for Muslims. Primetime television in Pakistan, which follows fasting time, is dominated by Ramadan-focused dramatic serials. These daily soap operas reflect the highs and lows of fasting Muslims, taking viewers on a journey of personal anxieties and familial frustrations to the ultimate holiday experience of Eid.
