From History to ‘Story’: A Storytelling Workshop with Colin Murphy

-

Location: 1030 Jenkins Nanovic Halls

The Keough-Naughton Institute invites students enrolled at Notre Dame, Saint Mary's, or Holy Cross to register for the following storytelling workshop with visiting playwright, screenwriter, and journalist Colin Murphy.

From History to ‘Story’: what happens when fact becomes fiction

Led by award-winning playwright, screenwriter and journalist Colin Murphy, this workshop will explore the writing of work that blurs the lines between journalism and drama. It will cover some or all of the following:

- What makes a "story"? How do journalists and dramatists each approach that question?
- What can drama do that journalism can’t?
- Story structure (three acts, five acts, etc)
- Taking artistic liberties with true stories
- Examples of fact-based dramas (e.g. All the President's Men, Say Nothing)
- Polarisation & filter bubbles: is theatre an antidote?

This workshop is open to undergraduate as well as graduate students and is aimed at students studying or with interest in playwriting, creative writing, and/or journalism. Participants will also be invited (but not required) to discuss their own work/projects/ideas.

Duration: approx. 3 hours (with a break)

Students may complete the linked google form to register for the workshop. Space is limited, so please register by Friday, February 21. Reach out to Ariel Clark-Semyck, Program Administrator, at aclarkse@nd.edu with any questions.

This workshop is co-sponsored by the Gallivan Program in Journalism, Ethics, and Democracy, the Creative Writing Program, and the Department of Film, Television and Theatre.
