About the Show

When Beatriz storms into her room to escape yet another fight between her parents, she turns to Beatrizita, a doll made for her by her recently deceased abuela, for comfort. Beatrizita magically comes to life and sends Beatriz searching for her abuela in Dreamland with nothing but a blank map to guide her. From an entangling forest of living trees through Babble-onia (a land where none of the inhabitants speak the same language), to an audience with the obnoxious king and queen of Dreamland themselves, Beatriz navigates through her fantastic adventures filled with wonder.

Beatriz's Journey (El Viaje de Beatriz) is directed by FTT senior Erin Farmer '26 and advised by FTT professor Sarah Gitenstein.

SCRIPT

Roles Available

  • BEATRIZ, Mexican-American girl, 10 - 12 years old, prone to both fits of temper and fits of wisdom (will be portrayed by a college student)

  • PAPÁ, Beatriz’s father
  • MAMÁ, Beatriz’s mother
  • BEATRIZITA, a doll, "Little Beatriz" made by Beatriz's dead abuela, bears the brunt of Beatriz's fits, sends her off to Dreamland to find her abuela. Portrayed by a puppet.
  • FOREST OF TWISTED TREES, intent on making Beatriz put down roots in a strange land
  • PACA, resident of Babble-onia. Responsible. Speaks Russian.*
  • ZENO, resident of Babble-onia. Grumpy. Speaks Dutch.*
  • CURI, resident of Babble-onia. Inquisitive. Speaks Hebrew.*
  • BABS, resident of Babble-onia. Impulsive. Speaks a silly made-up language.*
  • MORTIMER SHELDON FIDELMAN, the Promise Keeper, an irritable old man with glasses, a penchant for mumbling, and a job that’s too big for him
  • KING REY, King of Dreamland
  • QUEEN REINA, Queen of Dreamland
  • IZQUIERDA-DERECHA-AVANZADO, mythical guide with three personalities who can’t decide which way to go, portrayed by three actors together acting as each direction

*Note on the Residents of Babble-onia: Babble-onia is a strange part of Dreamland where no one speaks the same language. Different languages are given as suggestions in the script but may be changed to suit the languages of actors of the actors cast (provided the languages sound different than English and Spanish, so that Beatriz can’t understand them). Babs will always speak a made-up language.
