From the Archives

Michael Bennett’s A Chorus Line was originally produced in 1975 and premiered at The Public Theatre in New York City. The inception of this production was groundbreaking for its time - a musical created by chorus line dancers showcasing the harsh realities of show business. Being devoid of large scenery pieces, elaborate costumes, and even a star (hallmarks of many of the great Broadway musicals), A Chorus Line is credited as the show that saved Broadway in the late 1970s by bringing audience members flocking back in droves to witness the sensation. A Chorus Line also held the title of longest running musical in Broadway history from 1983 to 1997 when it was surpassed by Cats.

Director's Note

There could be no better way to celebrate five years of FTT’s musical theatre program than to produce what has become the department’s largest musical to date. With 26 students and faculty on the production side, a 19 student cast plus an additional 13 student ensemble, a 14 student off-stage chorus, a 17 person orchestra, 6 student costume shop assistants, and 7 student scene shop assistants, this production has been a massive undertaking for everyone involved and couldn’t have come together in a more spectacular way. A Chorus Line exemplifies the struggle of the working actor and puts on stage the ambition, desperation, and overarching humanism found within our cast of characters and the real people they were created from, and we are so excited to share these stories with you. -Matt Hawkins
