Welcome to the new academic year in the Department of Film, Television and Theatre! Our department supports a vibrant community of faculty, staff and students committed to pursuing excellence in scholarship and practice.
Over the summer, our award-winning faculty traveled across the U.S. and the globe continuing to generate remarkable works in the arenas of film and digital media studies, film and video production, theatre and performance studies, and theatre production.
Our FTT majors spent their summers continuing to study, work, and prepare for their ongoing studies. One FTT student performed Shakespeare. Another FTT student delved into Irish theatre archives. Another FTT student directed high school students in a production of Les Miserables. These are but a few examples of the many ways that our remarkable FTT students continue to grow as artists and scholars.
This year ahead will also provide new and thrilling avenues of inquiry with the inaugural Notre Dame Arts Biennial in Spring 2027, featuring four projects from our department:
- The Book of Will by Lauren Gunderson, following the journey of Shakespeare’s words from the stage to the page, directed by Professor Sarah Gitenstein
- Moving Thomas Sullivan, a new musical by Ben Warren Flynn (ND ’27) exploring a young man moving through grief, directed by Professor Matt Hawkins
- Dissolution Room, a multi-media immersive installation that reimagines the cave as a multifocal site by Professor Cecilia Kim and Professor David Bird of the Department of Music
- Lying Flat 2.0, an immersive, participatory theatre work engaging video and AI, by award-winning Chinese theatre artist Wang Chong, produced by Professor Tarryn Chun
We look forward to an exciting year in our department that captures the spirit of our College’s motto: Study Film, Television, and Theatre; Do Anything!
