Biography
Anne García-Romero is a playwright, screenwriter, translator, and theatre studies scholar. Her plays include Paloma, Dolorosa, Staging the Daffy Dame, Lorca in New York, Juanita's Statue, Mary Domingo, Mary Peabody in Cuba, Juanita’s Statue, Earthquake Chica, and Santa Concepción. Her plays have been developed and produced, most notably, at the Public Theater, the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, the Sol Project, the Goodman Theatre, the Mark Taper Forum, Denver Center Theatre, the Los Angeles Theatre Center and South Coast Repertory, as well as in Argentina and Chile. Her plays are published by Broadway Play Publishing, NoPassport Press and Playscripts. She’s an alumna of New Dramatists, Chicago Dramatists and the Goodman Theater Playwrights Unit.
Her co-translation of The Grönholm Method by Spanish playwright Jordi Galcerán has been produced in Los Angeles and London. Her short musical theatre works, Paella Star and Málaga, have been developed at Chicago Dramatists and New York Theatre Barn. She has also written for Gato Grande/MGM, Peninsula Films, and Disney Creative Entertainment.
She’s the author of The Fornés Frame: Contemporary Latina Playwrights and the Legacy of María Irene Fornés (University of Arizona Press, 2016). She’s co-editor, with Brian Eugenio Herrera, of María Irene Fornés in Context (Cambridge University Press, 2025). Her theatre studies scholarship has also been published by Latin American Theatre Review, Theatre Topics, Apuntes, Routledge, and the University of Michigan Press. She’s a founding member of the Latinx Theatre Commons, where she contributes to the Fornés Institute.
