Visual Cultures Workshop | "Not Everyone is a Hero": The Role of the Western in Contemporary Understanding of Black Gender Norms

-

Location: DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, B043 (View on map )

Vcw3 400x400

As a genre, the Western film has traditionally focused on defining the American frontier, masculinity, heroism, law and order, and good and evil. Despite the genre’s historical popularity across Africa and its diaspora, scholarship has been limited on its impact on Black fan cultures and how Black and African filmmakers have engaged with the conventions of the American Western. This workshop will explore recent post-Western films by Black and African filmmakers as historical texts to examine black gender norms across various geographical spaces.
