As a genre, the Western film has traditionally focused on defining the American frontier, masculinity, heroism, law and order, and good and evil. Despite the genre’s historical popularity across Africa and its diaspora, scholarship has been limited on its impact on Black fan cultures and how Black and African filmmakers have engaged with the conventions of the American Western. This workshop will explore recent post-Western films by Black and African filmmakers as historical texts to examine black gender norms across various geographical spaces.
Debora Rogo is a Kenyan attorney and human rights advocate. She received her J.D. from Washington University and the St. Louis School of Law and her B.A. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is currently a Ph.D. student in Peace Studies & History at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and a Kellogg Institute Doctoral Fellow.
