Requirements | FTT Major

As an FTT major, you will choose a concentration in Film, TV, or Theatre to focus your studies. Each concentration consists of a combination of required core courses and electives adding up to 30 credit hours. Each concentration provides you with the opportunity to take courses in production, design, and writing as well as courses in history, criticism, and theory. And each concentration offers you opportunities for internships, clubs and organizations, auditions, and thesis projects. 

No matter which concentration you choose as an FTT major, you can take elective courses in any of the three concentrations. Film students and theatre students alike may want to learn about lighting or acting; TV students may want to learn about film genres or playwriting; film students may want to know more about non-Western theatre; theatre students may want to know about video games; and so on. 

In certain special instances, if you wish to create an interdisciplinary major that combines two or more concentrations, you can work with the Chair and Director of Undergraduate Studies to design a program.

• Every FTT student must fulfill the Identity/International Course (I/I) attribute. 
• Generally, FTT majors may count the following toward their 30 credits:
  • One 3-credit or 1-credit internship 
  • Up to three 1-credit, letter-graded courses (do not
    count toward 40K requirements)
  • Up to two 3-credit study abroad or transfer courses
  • Up to three credit hours of independent thesis work

Identity/International Course

Every major in FTT is required to take at least one course with the Identity/International (I/I) attribute. Courses that carry the I/I attribute are 30000 or 40000 level electives centrally concerned with the exploration of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, religion, class, age, and/or nationality in and through film, television, and theatre. While other FTT core classes introduce students to—or have some content related to—these basic concepts, I/I courses provide a sustained, in-depth exploration of these issues. Grounded in the values and practices of inclusive pedagogy, these courses allow students to explore, reflect on, and understand cultural practices and representations of—and work made by—underrepresented communities and diverse global cultures. The I/I attribute does not require additional credit hours; it should be fulfilled within the student’s FTT electives.
